I enjoy country music, so I'm really looking forward to tonight. I expect to know most of the songs, for a change!
Michael Sarver - Ain't Goin' Down - I loved it that he chose this kind of song, instead of a big power ballad. I liked seeing this fun side of him. I don't think he's the strongest vocalist, but he's very likeable.
Allison Iraheta - "Blame it On Your Heart" - Glad she holds up her fingers for "2-time" for us. Helpful visual aid. Agree with Simon on the "a bit tuneless" and "verging on precocious". She's a good performer, but I always feel like she oversings, and often shouts. Not my favorite.
Kris Allen - "To Make You Feel My Love" - Loved how he owned this tune. Sweet. Randy said, "Tender Moments from my dawg Kris." Well, that just says it all, doesn't it?
Lil Rounds - "Independence Day" - Aw, Lil, I just didn't love this. Dress was cute, but looked like a prom dress. It's good that she's trying to show her versatility, but I think she accomplished the opposite tonight. She sounded just a little square, a little awkward, and like she was afraid to be herself. I really like Lil. Hope she sticks around to bring it next week.
Adam Lambert - "Ring of Fire" - Loved it when Randy Travis said, "For me, I don't see men wearing nail polish that often..." Classic. Brian said it sounded like a drug-induced Doors song, and he thought Adam was showing too much cleavage. He said, "Johnny is rolling over in his grave." It's all a bit too Freddy Mercury for me.
Scott MacIntyre - "Wild Angels" - Wow, huge improvement with Scott's hair! Good advice from Paula about getting out from behind the piano and connecting with the audience. I liked this a lot better than last week's song choice.
Alexis Grace - "Jolene" - Such a melancholy song, and I like what she did with it. I hear Dolly, but it's fresher. I think she looks better than last week...classy. I like her less "dirty".
Danny Gokey - "Jesus Take the Wheel" - What's up with Danny? He was way off his game in rehearsal. Hmmm...I didn't love the performance as much as the judges and audience, even though I really like Danny and this song. This is such a departure for him to be so rough, I'm thinking there may have been behind-the-scenes issues...illness? stress? nerves w/Randy Travis? I expect to see him pull through and come back better than ever next week.
Anoop Desai - "You Were Always On My Mind" - Wow. Wow. Wow. I love this side of Anoop. What a nice song choice! Not a big Willie fan, but THIS I loved! Talk about a Tender Dawg! So sensitive. This was the best of the night for me! Simon said, "You just managed to go from zero to hero." I would so buy this recording.
Megan Joy - "Walking After Midnight" - Looks lovely tonight - wish I looked that good with the flu! Bless her heart! I thought the song was still a little kooky, but so much better than "Rockin' Robin".
Matt Giraud - "Small" - Gravelly and smooth at the same time. So very nice. Liked the suit. Really enjoyed this song, except for the last note, which was just a little flat.
Favorites tonight - Anoop, Matt, & Kris.
Least favorites tonight - Megan, Adam, Allison
Hope they bring their game next week - Lil and Danny
As always, BooMama & friends have a little something to say on the subject. If you're not reading them, you're missing out!

American Idol Top 13
OK...I totally wasn't going to do this this year, but Brian was working in the yard and I had issues with the sewing pattern I wanted to work on, so I found myself glued to AI. And since I went to the trouble of watching it, here's my little nutshell opinion.
I expect to see Lil Rounds and Danny Gokey in the finals, and that will make the whole season worth it. Oh, and if we could have Kris and Matt up until the end, that would be great too.
I thought Lil was gorgeous...and such the diva (in a good way). And Simon, I liked the powder puff thing. Loved the way she commanded the stage.
Danny was incredible. Powerful singing, adorably dorky dancing (in a good way) that just reinforced his joy and enthusiasm for making music. Entertaining without being overly dramatic. Love him. I'm calling it right now for Danny.
Kris was fun and fresh. Couldn't really hear the guitar, so it seemed more like an accessory (in a good way). I'd like to see him stick around.
Adam is a fabulous entertainer...so slick and polished. But he's a drama queen, and that gets under my skin a little. I'd like him a whole lot more if he ramped down the drama a bit (and that includes the eye makeup). He reminds me of Liza Minelli just a little (NOT in a good way).
Matt's voice gives me chills (in a good way). Gravely and soulful. Loved him behind the piano.
Sweet Jasmine is absolutely beautiful, and so graceful/gracious. Her voice is lovely, and she is certainly poised and pretty. Classy and fashionable, sweet and wholesome...a great package. I know we've seen young AI winners, but I feel Jasmine is just a little young vocally for the competition this year. I'd love to see her come back at 19 or 20.
Everybody else was "just ok for me, dawg." It's a nice group of 13, but I'm having a hard time picturing anyone surpassing Danny for performance, vocal skill, and overall likeability. So that's all I'm gonna say about AI today!
Please stop by and see BooMama and the gang for more AI reviews!

Let's Get Ready to Rumble - American Idol Finals
Here we go, interpeeps. The finals of American Idol have come down to Battle of the Davids.
Umm...OK...the intro? And my title, for that matter? Pure Cheese. Break out the tortilla chips, and let's have some queso.
Quit the jabbering already, and lets do some singing!
-----Round One-----
"DC Comics" David Cook - I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For (Clive Davis' choice) Wow...what a difference a good theatre makes! The acoustics strike me as being much nicer...much rounder. I think that will help with the pitch issues we heard last week. This was an awesome choice for Cook. And a prize-worthy performance. LOVED it.Paula, dear? Please stop with those song segue compliments...they're cheesier than the boxing references!
"The Shaggy DA" David Archuleta - Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me (Clive Davis' choice) DA is clearly the better vocalist in these finals. But I believe that DC is the better performer, and the more entertaining of the two. I could listen to DA sing all day, but I'd rather watch DC.-----Round Two-----
DC - Dream Big (Songwriter's Choice) Hmmm...I didn't like this as much. He's singing his heart out, with passion, but it sounded like he was screaming. And that's not good, on the heels of DA's velvet vocals.
DA - In This Moment (Songwriter's Choice) The first few words were a little thin and unsupported. But he took off at the chorus. I don't get the anchor jacket. Vocals still great, but he can do even better.-----Round Three-----
DC - The World I Know (David's Choice) DC has given us a nice variety tonight. I loved this gentle rocker version. I love the way he "gets" the music. He doesn't just look earnest, he looks like the song is real for him. That said, I think Simon may be right when he said that DC should have chosen one of his former "hits" for this show. It's clear that this song is meaningful to DC, so it was a nice choice for him, if not the best choice for the finals.
DA - Imagine (David's Choice) WOW. WWOWWWW! I remember that this was uh-may-zing the first time he did it. But this? This was the best vocal performance of the season, in my opinion. And the Winner is...David!
Um, yeah. This was a weird finals night. I went into it rooting for David Cook. I think he has been consistently strong, choosing fresh songs (or choosing moldy oldies and making them fresh), and adding a sensitive rocker twist to them. I think he has a poet's soul, and that he analyzes the text of the song, then highlights it musically and vocally. He has a rocker's voice, so it's coarse and rough, but he's careful with how he applies it to the music, and I appreciate that. I really like his performances, because I believe he communicates the songs he chooses.
David Archuleta, on the other hand, has amazing depth to his voice. His vocals are pure and refined, and he sings earnestly, but I don't always believe he's communicating the meaning of the song. It appears to me that he focuses on the general feeling of the song, then tries to look happy or sad or inspirational. I think this is something that he will improve with time, and that there will be certain songs that he "gets" and pours himself into, like he did with Imagine. But his youthfulness makes his songs seem a little shallow to me sometimes.
All that said, I would be delighted for either of these young men to win this season. I'm glad it came down to these two...this is the ending I hoped for, even though it's not all I hoped it would be. As far as I'm concerned, DAVID is the next American Idol!
OK, Interpeeps, that's all I've got. I won't be weighing in tomorrow night. This is my season finale. Don't forget to stop by BooMama's to read what all the cool people are saying about the American Idol finals!

American Idol - Top 3
Taking a page from Cindy, I'm going to attempt to keep my comments short & sweet. Let's see...3 words, a quote (possibly paraphrased), and a summation. It won't be as funny as Cindy, but hopefully it will at least be brief...er. My pick for each round will be in red.
David Archuleta - And So It Goes (Paula's choice) - Sweet. Simple. Squinty. "In it to win it." Nice choice. Not stunning, but, well, sweet.
Syesha Mercado - If I Ain't Got You (Randy's choice) - Sparkly. Smiley. So-not-Alicia. "Peaking late in the competition." I know she loved the choice, but I agree with Simon, I wish she'd had the opportunity to sing something less identifiable with a star.
David Cook - The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face (Simon's choice) - Sultry. Stunning. Stellar. "My second favorite person who sings it." I loved this one. LOVED it. LOVED IT!!! Perfect choice, Simon. Was that his mama standing in the audience? It was. Oh. How. Sweet.
David Archuleta - With You (David's choice) - Weird. Weak. Wobbly (dancing). "A chihuahua trying to be a tiger." The girls loved it. I didn't.
Syesha Mercado - Fever (Syesha's choice) - Eyebrows. Theatrical. Old-fashioned. (Had to give up the alliteration.) "I think you're going to regret that tomorrow." Fun, for a musical review or cabaret show. Not Top 40 radio material.
David Cook - I Dare You to Move (David's choice) - Pitchy. Under-energized. Semi-cool. "I wanted more." Not his best, but the best of this round.
David Archuleta - Longer (Producer's choice) - Pretty. Predictable. Put-together (wardrobe). "You could sing the phone book." And "It was so gooey." Gorgeous, gooey vocals.
Syesha Mercado - Hit Me Up (Producer's choice) - Sassy. Sequiny. Slippery (pitches). "It's a song about penguins." Last week was better...maybe she peaked too late.
David Cook - I Don't Want to Miss a Thing (Producer's choice) - Stringy. Silky. Superb. "This is where the beginning, the middle, and the end is." And "See ya in the finals." 'Nuff said.
David Cook wins the night. Simon Says. I do to. You go, boy!
Now, for the love of all things funny, please go see BooMama's review!

American Idol - The Final Four
That would be Top 4. I must say, I'm about ready to wrap this thing up. Crown the Davids and let's be done, ok? Rock & Roll Hall of Fame should give us a little more variety. Let's get started, shall we?
David Cook - Hungry like a Wolf – I liked the “doo doo doo” part. I just love the way he makes eye contact with the audience. I hear a little bit of pitchiness tonight, and I had trouble making out the words. Plus, what is going on with the back of that boy’s head? I thought this was less vibrant than some of the other songs. I agree with Randy. I’m a little creeped out at Paula’s comments.
Syesha Mercado – Proud Mary – Hmmm….taking on another icon? This could be bad news. She looks amazing. OK…those pitch problems just persist, don’t they? She’s a great performer, but the vocals are still very important! Does anyone else see a little bit of Halle Berry in Syesha? Especially when she gets emotional.
Jason Castro - I Shot the Sheriff - Ha! "Go figure" cracked me up! I'm not a Bob Marley fan, but this is Jason's vibe. He seemed to be enjoying it more than he has in weeks. I really didn't hate it as much as the judges did. I liked that he had fun with it.
David Archuleta - Stand By Me - I wish David's stylists would help him get a slightly more mature look. I'd like to see him in a tailored untucked button down shirt, not these skater clothes...still youthful, but with a little more substance. Let's get Clinton Kelly on the scene. Anywho. LOVED the vocals tonight. I liked this song for him. Ha Ha! "Their faces scare me" also cracked me up!
David Cook - Baba O'Riley - Man, how lame am I? I have never heard of this song, but I thought this was cooler than the first song. The pitchiness is still there, but not as pronounced. Is it just me, or does he look stressed and exhausted tonight? Still, he is consistently cool and a great performer.
Yeehaw for the Rascals! Love me some Rascal Flatts!
Syesha Mercado - A Change is Gonna Come - Nice job, Syesha. Seemed to have a little issue on the last line, but very, very nice. Pretty dress (but it needs a little hanky there in the neckline). That is a seriously groovy Syesha poster in the audience. I disagree with Randy. I actually liked this better than the first song. I think Paula was right on the money (and surprisingly lucid tonight). Glad to hear Simon agrees!
Jason Castro - Mr. Tambourine Man - Oh no. So sorry Jason. I had high hopes than you could outshine Ms. Syesha and stick around another week...for the sake of the Aggies. But you just can't blank out on words in the top 4. There's just no room for that. But I still like you. I would love to see you in your real element. Do you wanna come lead worship in our church one Sunday this summer? Seriously. Have your people call my people.
David Archuleta - Love Me Tender - Oh, how sad is it that David doesn't know "Love Me Tender"? Hey...how did the stylists read my post before I even posted it? Much better look. Poor baby, he looks a little pained. He needs to let David Cook teach him how to make eyes at the audience. But those vocals? Absolutely glorious. Chills. Well done, young David.
I was prepared to love David Cook tonight, but I really liked David Archuleta and Syesha Mercado the best tonight.
Jason, keep the faith. Keep singing. It's been fun watching you.
If you can't get enough of American Idol, you'll want to stop by BooMama's for a refreshing take on tonight's show.

Jason Castro - Live from College Station?
OK, honestly? When Jason Castro sang Hallelujah? I totally wanted him to win, then and there. Since that week, I don't think he's been as strong, but there's still something very likeable about him. I don't see him winning this whole she-bang, but I'd love to see him make it through this week. Why? Because the top 3 get to have a "home town concert", and Jason's will be in College Station. On the A&M campus. How cool is that? My sweet friend Julie (who introduced me and Brian, so I owe her!) sent me this email that is being distributed to Aggieland:
All – I wanted to make you aware that we will have American Idol here on our campus next Thursday, provided that Texas A&M student and Rockwall native Jason Castro makes the top 3 finalists during the Tuesday and Wednesday’s shows. This will be an incredible opportunity to showcase Texas A&M for a national TV audience of about 33 million viewers.So...for the love of Texas...(and Aggieland)...and for my friend Julie, please give a little voting love to Jason tonight!
As the plan stands today, Jason and the American Idol crew will arrive at Easterwood Airport on Thursday, May 8, at 5 p.m.; then he will perform a 1-hour outdoor “concert” at 7 p.m. on the steps of the Academic Building. As part of the concert, we will have a mini Yell Practice to showcase some of what makes Texas A&M a special place. We have engaged many campus units today regarding this opportunity, and we will start some promotion of the event this afternoon via social network sites such as Facebook.
For all of this to happen here on our campus, of course, is that Jason will have to perform well and get his share of the 45 million votes that will be cast. We’re hoping Aggies will help boost his numbers. The event continues to evolve and plans are moving quickly. We’ll keep you updated if anything changes drastically, and let me know if you have any questions.

American Idol - Five Alive

5 Alive...Yes, I am that old.
Neil Diamond, huh? He wrote the soundtrack of my childhood. I don't know a lot of his songs, but those I do know remind me of slumber parties and family vacations and talent shows. It will be intersting to see how many of these kids are able to make something new and interesting out of these golden oldies.
I didn't watch AI live tonight...we were getting haircuts and then working on home improvement projects, so I watched the clips on YouTube just now. Therefore, I have no idea what order these songs came in. Actually, I saw the last 3 songs live, but the rest were on Memorex...err...YouTube. Does Neil Diamond night make anyone else feel the arthur-itis coming on? OK...let me dust my cobwebs off and we'll get started.
The Top 5, in no particular order:
Jason Castro - Forever in Blue Jeans - Loved the low range for him at the beginning...it was manly, solid, less squirrely. Oh, he had to pop up into his high. Which is nice, but not supported enough. Oh well. Still a nice rendition of a rather dated song. Jason is a sweetie, and just adorable, dreads & all, but I don't think he compares to the star wattage of David Cook. I'm afraid he may be near the end.
September Morn - Jason sings with such a laid back, sort of cheesy Love Boat feel, that I feel like I'm hearing the original version, only without the polish of Neil Diamond. I really liked the "Hallelujah" Jason, but I haven't liked him as much since then. I've enjoyed seeing some of the videos of him leading worship, though.
David Cook - I'm Alive - I don't know this one. I'm sure you're all surprised by that. I'm a regular pop culture encyclopedia...NOT. Anyway. This sounded cool to me. If it weren't Neil Diamond night, I'd have never guessed that it was a Neil Diamond song. I think we might as well just cinch this thing up right now. David Cook seems head & shoulders above the rest, in terms of his performance skills. He just maintains the poise, and comes up with something fresh and original each week. Even when I don't really like the song, I still think he's the best!
All I Really Need is You - Guess what? I don't know this song either. But. Chills. Really. As a vocalist, I really love strong, clear vocals (like David Archuleta), but I'm a total sucker for a singer who interprets his song. He makes these songs contemporary by making them meaningful. Current arrangements, appropriate dynamics, and a little bit of drama. I would seriously buy this on iTunes. But I don't have an iPod. Yep...I really am ancient. Or cheap. Or both.
David Archuleta - Sweet Caroline - I remember listening to this song on my parents' Readers' Digest cassette back in the late 70's/early 80's on road trips in our station wagon. Time to take some Metamucil and Bengay...maybe some Milk of Magnesia. Let me put my pink foam rollers in and cover them with a hairnet. OK...now to little Archie. Cute. Good. But, it seemed like a really nice voice covering a rather stale tune. Is that Bengay I smell on him? He needs to work on his "hip factor" or he'll just end up as another Clay Aiken. Cute, great voice, but kind of boring.
America - OK, this song is probably just a hint more contemporary than "Sweet Caroline". I could see him singing this on some network TV July 4th program. But really, David, you're starting to remind me of a really excellent singer on "Up with People". I think you're smart to choose songs which show off your vocals, but I'd love to see you sing a song that David Cook picked out for you! Then apply those stellar vocals. That would be hot.
Syesha Mercado - Hello Again - Barefoot? Weird. Syesha is just beautiful. And so poised. She reminds me a bit of Katherine McPhee...nice vocals. Very talented, but not as original as David Cook or as vocally strong as David Archuleta. Still, I would love to see her in a Broadway show...she'd be very entertaining.
Thank the Lord for the Night - She certainly takes command of the stage, much like David Cook, but in more of a Diva fashion. When I see her, I see an actress with surprising vocal talent, rather than a vocalist who can act. I think she gets in over her head vocally, so she makes up for it by performing big. But I think she is at her best when she has a mental idea of the character she's playing. That's what would make her great on the Great White Way.
Brooke White - Believer - Hmmm...the low just doesn't seem to work for Brooke, at least not at this tempo. She looks like she's trying too hard. That didn't do it for me. It was kind of Brady Bunch cheesy. I don't think I like guitar Brooke as much as piano Brooke.
I Am I Said - Her comments with Ryan were a little strange. Oh well. I like this a lot better already. Good range for her. In fact, I like her version better than Neil's. Very nice. Much more suited to her. This might redeem her. But the first one was so poor, I fear she may be on her way out.
Miles Ahead: David Cook
Almost There: David Archuleta and Syesha Mercado
Had a Good Run: Jason Castro and Brooke White
Please do stop by BooMama's to see her witty commentary on the Top 5. And definitely check out Cindy and Scott...these two are the dynamic duo of AI blogging. Very FUNNY and Alphabetical.

American Idol Top 6 - on Broadway!
Tonight's Andrew Lloyd Weber night. Cool. I do love me some musical theatre!
Here's something to get us in the mood:
Is it just me, or does Andrew Lloyd Weber (hereafter ALW) have some really wacked out eyebrows? He reminds me of Mike Myers. Check it out:

OK...now that that is established, I will say that he seems to be very gracious. And in the world of musical theatre, he's a genius. He says his music is story driven - good - that's what these kids need work on. This should be fun.
Syesha Mercado - One Rock 'n' Roll Too Many - Seemed like she was a little off rhythmically on the entrance, but she caught up quickly. Looks smokin' tonight - cute, cute hair. Such a nice performance. A nice sassy feel. I'm so glad to see her get a chance to really show off. Though I'm still a David Cook "Cookie", I've liked Syesha all along, and I think she really showed her stuff tonight. And Broadway would be a great place for her. Well done!
Jason Castro - Memory - Wow...interesting choice for him. This is such an iconic song with Betty Buckley, that it's kind of a risk...wonder if he knew that! Nice in the islandy suit. Pretty. Not sure he understood it in context of Cats, but he put a nice spin on it. His breathing though? It's driving me crazy. He really needs to improve the breathing. I think that's standing between him and real success. I think Simon's comments were the most honest. It seemed like something he was being forced to sing. Oh sweet Jason, please get a vocal coach and work on the breath control. You'd be magnificent with that improvement!
"Our own resident glamourpuss, Simon Cowell." Funny, Ryan!
Brooke White - You Must Love Me - I love this song from Evita. My middle school choir sang it years ago. Bravo, ALW, for making her .....Oh, Brooke, it's rough when you flub the words. But you just have to keep going. At least she wasn't too far into it. I don't really like the way she's singing it line by line. It weakens the message, I think. It makes it look like she's trying to remember all the words. "Frightened you'll slip away" was my favorite line. Maybe because she looked frightened. I wish she'd worn her hair up in a bun...more severe and dramatic...a little less sunny. I think that would have helped her carry it off better. It was very nice, but it didn't seem right for her. And really, if you're going to sing musical theatre, you need to know what the song and character are about. I'm glad she didn't talk back to the judges. That's an improvement.
Side note: I can't stand the camera angle behind the waving hands. It's very distracting.
David Archuleta - Think of Me - Wow, I am really impressed with the advice that ALW gives. I think it's been very productive. WOWWWW, David, that was a GREAT spin on this song. Very contemporary and not musical theatre-y. A nice pop style...could be on the radio. That's my favorite David A. performance in several weeks!
Carly Smithson - Jesus Christ, Superstar - Good call, that. Very cool dress. It looked like she had fun with it. She kind of shouted the chorus, but it worked. It's not one of my favorite songs, but it was pretty good. I liked the t-shirt, though. And I really liked the dress.
David Cook - Music of the Night - What a nice departure for him. Maybe not the best performance of this song, but it did show that he's not a one-trick pony. Loved the final notes.
Favorite performances tonight: David Archuleta and Syesha Mercado.
Weakest performances tonight: I'm sorry to say it, but I feel that Jason and Brooke were the weakest of the night. Either of them could and should go.
Now go forth, quickly, to BooMama's. Because the Phantom of the Opera? He's there. Kidding. But all the best AI reviews can be found there!

American Idol - 7 Left!
Hmmm...Mariah Carey night. I'm not sure I'm looking forward to this. I don't hate Mariah, but I've never been a huge fan. I think it sounds like a recipe for a lot of screeching and an opportunity for Syesha to tackle another diva song. On the other hand, it should be another great opportunity for David Cook to do something miraculous with an unusual arrangement. This should be interesting.
David Archuleta - Believe - This seems like a very chopped-up arrangement. It sounded to me like they made sure to leave in all the cool licks, even if it meant the song wouldn't make sense. He sang it quite well, and very sensitively, but I really didn't love the arrangement. Simon's right, this might actually go better for the men, since they won't automatically be compared to Mariah.
Carly Smithson - Can't Live - Wow...fabulous look tonight. Love the SLEEVES! Gorgeous color, nice to see her in a dress. Great look for her. I like the vulnerability, having her in front of the piano, singing softly at the start. WOW Carly, this is just what I've been waiting to hear from you. Hmm, Randy didn't like the first part, but I really did! I agree with Paula...the vocal restraint before the swell was just so nice. Simon says she was overthinking and holding back. I did hear that, so I agree with him on those points, but I feel it was so much better than what we've been seing from her.
Syesha Mercado - Vanishing - What a pretty lavender dress Syesha wore in the rehearsal. I thought it was great that Mariah made a point of helping Syesha to make the song her own. Pretty dress for the performance, too. The glittery hair is interesting. Now, I'm not familiar with the Mariah version of this song, so I don't know if she made it her own or not, but I thought it was very nice. The first "Oh---" lick seemed to have 1 or 2 notes that were off, but I really liked the 2nd lick. I really like Syesha, and I think she's got SO MUCH potential. A good performance.
Brooke White - Hero - I like her behind the piano. She looks really pretty tonight. I loved the bridge. I thought she had a few pitch issues, a nasal tone, and I thought she got ahead of herself a bit...rushing the last chorus. Nice, but she didn't shine like she did a few weeks ago. Randy didn't like the bridge...funny. I wish she wouldn't pout during the comments. Still like her, but didn't love this.
Kristy Lee Cook - Forever - I don't know this song. Another really pretty dress. I like the styling for the girls tonight. I like this country-fied rendition. This seems to suit Kristy. Very, very nice, Kristy! The glittery eyelashes bother me...they make me feel like I'm gonna get glitter in my eyes. Brian called this a "rope-a-dope" (can you tell he's a dittohead?)...the way she's stepped up her game all of the sudden these last few weeks. I thought she was great tonight. I wish she'd been able to start off this way...and maintain it.
David Cook - Always Be My Baby - This wasn't as "miraculous" as I was hoping for, but it was certainly an interesting take. I actually didn't love it like I did "Billie Jean", but I did like how different it was from the Mariah style...it was fresh and cool. Hmm...listening to the judges, maybe it was miraculous. I'm glad for him...because he is so talented and consistently good.
Jason Castro - I Don't Wanna Cry - I love how Mariah has helped the contestants to restyle/rewrite the tunes. This is a good, out-of-the-box choice for Jason. I really want Jason to get some coaching for breath control. He is such an interesting and sensitive singer, but he is so hampered by his breathing. That said, I really liked this performance tonight. Definitely a step forward for him. Simon doesn't know what a luau is? Poor Simon, he's so sheltered. But I agree with him. Not the best vocal of the night, but a very cool version, and very "Jason".
Surprisingly, I really liked Kristy and Carly tonight, but I think it's probably too little too late. I thought Simon was right when he said the guys won tonight. I liked David Cook and Jason Castro. David Archuleta sounded wonderful, but I didn't get the arrangement. On the whole, I liked Mariah night better than I thought I would. And it sounds like all of the singers are making great progress. Good for them. I still look for David or David to take it all. I'm off to set my VCR for tomorrow night...don't want to miss anything this week!

Note to Self: Record Weds. Night American Idol!
Man! I can't believe I missed it...Again! I go to choir practice on Wednesday nights, so I generally miss American Idol. I'm sure many of you will think we're hopelessly out of date when I tell you that we don't have TIVO or a DVR. So when I want to record something, it involves a lengthy process of searching for a VHS tape that isn't too old or warped to tape over. Then I have to remember how to set the silly thing. And, well, American Idol on Wednesday's is generally just not a big deal. They rehash Tuesday, and they make a big deal about narrowing down the bottom 3, and then someone goes home. I can wait for the news at 10, or check the internet the next day, and save myself the VCR hassle, you know?
WELL. I have officially learned my lesson. Last week, I learned that I missed a kickin' version of "This Little Light of Mine" (Clark Brothers) and Dolly singin' about Jesus. That's just good TV, right there. Then today, I was reading Ocean Mommy's blog, and read this! It sounds like they had some CHURCH. UP. IN. THERE! Oh, I wish I'd seen it live! If you're a weiner like me, and missed out on it, do hop on over to Notes from the Soul and see video, 'K?
And, if you think of it, please remind me to tape AI next Wednesday!
Edited to add: Check out Frydaddy's (Travis Cottrell) thoughts on the subject. He shares an important perspective.

American Idol - Top 8
Yikes...I just got home, and the show's already started. Sounds like they're doing songs that inspire them, as part of the "American Idol Gives Back" thing. This should allow them to make really personal choices, which is good. They need to choose songs that are meaningful, and inspirational, while still being appropriate for their voices. That will be interesting.
Michael Johns - ? - I missed Michael's performance. We ate dinner at California Pizza Kitchen on the other side of town, and we didn't make it home in time. I couldn't tell much from the clip at the end. I may update this post with comments on his performance after I find the video on the internet.
Syesha Mercado - I Believe - I haven't heard the Fantasia version of this song...I didn't watch much of that season. I thought Syesha did a great job, though. She's a brave girl, taking on the giants, and I think she does try to make the song her own. However, if she's going to continue and rise above the crowd, she'll have to do a powerhouse song that hasn't been made famous by a powerhouse. I thought she connected with the song and with the audience, but she didn't elicit a powerful response...it lacked conviction. I think Syesha will go on to be a star, but I don't look for her to win this competition. She's so likeable and adorable, I hope we'll see more of her after American Idol.
Jason Castro - Somewhere Over the Rainbow - I don't like it when singers add "h's" in the middle of words where the notes should be slurred (lullabye-hi-hi-hi-hi, true-hu-hu). Didn't like that. I thought the ukulele was a cute touch, but this wasn't my favorite Jason effort. I think Jason is very original, but I'm surprised the judges liked it that much. And, cute as he is, his sweater looks kinda girly. Not diggin' that.
Kristy Lee Cook - Anyway - I liked what Kristy had to say about the song. It's almost autobiographical for her, and it reveals her convictions and a bit of her personality. She looks great tonight. This was a good song for her...a smart choice. The girl has talent, and so much potential. I'd love for her to work with a vocal coach, to listen to recordings of herself, and to work on strengthening her range and her ear. She's a good singer, but she can become an even better musician if she applies herself. I think this was her best performance, by far, but I don't think it will dwarf the giants of this competition. Nevertheless, I expect we'll see more of her, in the country genre, after this competition is over. Kellie Pickler didn't need to win to make it to Nashville, and I think Kristy Lee is more likeable than Kellie.
David Cook - Innocent - Brian says, "Hitler had a good heart at the end of the day?" He makes a good point. Weird jacket...sort of a straight jacket look. I don't know this song. Didn't love it. The walk out into the audience and the little hand gesture at the end were cool, though. I still think he's excellent, but I agree with Simon, this wasn't nearly as good as the last few weeks.
Carly Smithson - The Show Must Go On - I think her look tonight is good...sleeves would be nice, but I'm thinking that won't happen. I liked the first part, but the chorus seemed to have a few pitch problems on the licks. The song seemed to get away from her a little and she oversang. I'm not sure what was inspirational about the song. This girl has great pipes, but it seems like she doesn't have a strong sense of what will work for her. That will have to improve if she's going to stick around.
David Archuleta - Angels - Wow...didn't know little David played the piano! Still a great voice, and a sensitive and emotional performance, but he almost gets lost sitting behind the piano. I think he lost some of his stage presence. Randy's right, the runs at the end were excellent. This is one very gifted young man. He makes it seem so effortless. The lyrics are odd, some weird theology, but he communicated them well.
Brooke White - You've Got a Friend - That dress is kickin'. I love it! She looks beautiful tonight. Great song choice, too. Her voice sounds a little tired tonight, but this was still a very tender, sweet performance. I love this song. There was nothing terribly unique about this performance, but Brooke is unique in her gentleness.
So I wasn't blown away by anyone tonight, though David Archuleta's performance was my favorite of the night. And, surprisingly, I really liked Kristy Lee Cook tonight. I was ready for her to go this week, but I thought she actually showed Carly up. Usually by this point in the season, we're down to 3 stars and 5 that we're ready to see go. But this season, I see 4 or 5 stars, and several emerging stars who just need another year to mature as performers. And since Kristy Lee stepped it up this week, I'm not sure who we'll see go. Based on tonight's performances, I think Carly should go, but since Kristy hasn't been consistently strong, she may go. Brooke could also be in the bottom this week, I'm afraid.
Edited to add: I'm such a doofus. I forgot, AGAIN, to add a link to the AI Hostess Extraordinaire, BooMama. She offers a MUCH more entertaining take on the evening! Do stop by and pay her a visit!

American Idol - Top Nine
Yeah! Dolly Parton is the mentor tonight. I must admit, right off the bat, that I have always loved her. She has such a sweet and gentle personality. She's a very smart and talented musician, singer, and songwriter. For these reasons, I think she'll be a great mentor. I'm looking forward to hearing what she offers. I think it will make for some interesting songs, too.
Brooke White - Jolene - Hmmm...I like country Brooke. She looks very natural and at ease, and this is a good choice for her. Different from her regular groove, yet not cheesy. I like the intensity she brought to the song. Simon didn't see emotion, but I disagree. I saw fierceness in her eyes, like she was fighting for her man. I liked it.
David Cook - Little Sparrow - I don't know this Dolly song. Good look tonight...the white shirt is a nice contrast to his usual look, and the haircut is sharp. I loved the very first line, and the fragility of it. His falsetto just reinforces that sense of fragility, making it a smart choice. David is my pick to win it all. I think he's smart and creative, and an excellent musician.
Ramielle Malubay - Do I Ever Cross Your Mind - She doesn't look very comfortable singing country...it seemed a little karaoke. She had some pitch issues, and seemed to get a little lost in the back beat. I'm sure this was a stretch for her but she looked like she had fun with it. I liked it better than the last few weeks, but I didn't love it. I agree with Simon, it was cute, but forgettable. I think Ramielle has great potential, but I seriously doubt she'll win this season. I hope she spends this next year really figuring out what she's about, what her musical style is, what her optimal range is. She needs to figure out her musical identity. Then she can choose songs from various genres that she understands how to sing and make her own. I think that's what she's lacking right now.
Jason Castro - Travelin' Through - I'd so love to hear Jason do this as a duet with Dolly, like he did in practice. Good for Jason! He found a way to be different this week. I like the increased intensity in his sound on this song. He picked up the tempo and energy. I still like the more melancholy Jason better (Hallelujah), but this proved he has some versatility.
Carly Smithson - Here You Come Again - I never knew that Dolly didn't write this! Learned something new tonight. I liked Carly's slower version. I believed her on this one. I felt she connected better than she has in many weeks. I didn't love her look tonight, but Brian thought she looked better. I'd like to see her in a hip, funky dress, and with a little less eye makeup...it almost obscures her gorgeous eyes. LOVED her long note. I like the smoky sound of her voice on this kind of song...right in the meat of her range. So good, Carly!
David Archuleta - Smoky Mountain Memories - What a beautiful, pure voice. He doesn't need American Idol...he is already a star. He is vocally sublime. This was a perfect song choice for him, and
Kristy Lee Cook - Coat of Many Colors - I LOVE this song. Kristy looks pretty tonight, but I actually preferred her leaner, hipper country look in her practice session. She sounded more confident and natural in the practice session, as well. She seemed a little stiff and old-fashioned sitting on the stage. I agree with Randy, country is definitely her genre, but Simon is also right...this was pleasant but forgettable. Last week was better for her, I think.
Syesha Mercado - I Will Always Love You - Syesha said she found an emotional connection - so important. She looks glamorous tonight. Didn't like the breath in al-ways. I think Dolly was right: she found a nice place between Dolly's and Whitney's versions, and made this one her very own. I liked the sweet smile before the big finish, LOVED the sustained note, and the sweet teary tenderness as she ended it. Nicely done, Syesha. I think this is one of her best performances.
Michael Johns - It's All Wrong, But It's All Right - What's with the cravat? Does anyone else think he looks like Jamie Oliver, the Naked Chef? Maybe that's just me. OK...I thought this was pretty good. It was an interesting bluesy arrangement. I actually like him better as a blues singer than a rock singer. He seems to "get it" better than he does the rock stuff. I even liked it better than his Queen renditions.
HOT tonight: David Cook (of course), David Archuleta, Syesha Mercado, Michael Johns, & Carly Smithson.
Should Go: Kristy or Ramielle. Kristy has made great progress the last two weeks, but she's just not as strong and polished as some of the others. And though Ramielle has great potential, I believe she is out of her league this year. I like both of these girls, but it's time for them to go.
As always, let me remind you to visit Boomama and all the other armchair judges on her Mr. Linky! See you next week!

American Idol - Top 10
Yea! The Beatles have left the building...er...um...something like that. Tonight's theme is fun: pick a song from the year in which you were born. I'm guessing we'll get some good 80's songs. Top 10, 1987 songs? I feel like I'm about to graduate all over again. Sing with me: And friends are friends forever if the Lord's the Lord of them... Oh, um, 'scuse me...I digressed. I'm listening with clogged ears tonight (really bad cold), but I don't think it will affect my judgement too much. Was anyone else SHOCKED to see Amanda leave last week? I really expected Kristy to go, but I can't say I was sorry that Amanda left.
Ramielle Malubay - Heart Alone - It's very common for a young woman to be able to belt, but not have continuity across her range. She's not in good voice tonight, but it may be due to the way she's singing, rather than illness. She needs to work up and down her range, and this is not the place or time to do that. When she's strengthened her low and high ends of her voice, everything will lock in much better, and she won't have those whispery low notes and pitch problems. Her sound is powerful but unsupported. I think she needs another year of vocal training, then she could be a real contender.
Jason Castro - Things are Fragile - Glad to see him back with his guitar. He looks way more comfortable that way. I don't know this song, but it's nice. Showing some more language skills. I'd love to see him stretch just a little, to put that expressive voice and gentleness into a song with a little more power, emotionally and vocally. I think he needs another WOW song, one that packs a punch. Then he needs to immerse himself in the text...become one with the song, if you will.
Syesha Mercado - If I Was Your Woman - She looks great. Wow...I don't know who did this song originally, but that was powerful. That was a really strong performance...on a par with Whitney. I liked the continuity of tone throughout her range (which is what Ramielle needs).
*********Let me just say that I'm hating that these kids were born the year I graduated from high school! Bummer. Like, totally gag me with a spoon.
Chikezie Eze - If Only For One Night - good for him, choosing a song that resonates with him. Love me some Luther. I'd like to see him stand still and sing a ballad like this, but with a little less of the modern-day r&b groove, handshaking, etc. I'd like him to see him focus. Make eyes at the audience and let us feel like he's really singing a love song. He needs to make us feel like we're alone in a room with him when he sings this kind of song. His voice is gorgeous, but he looks like an immature kid trying to sing a grown-up song.
Brooke White - Every Breath You Take - Wow, cool look for her...although it makes her look older, somehow. The false start was a little scary, but she maintained her composure, which is excellent. This song was good. It was sweet, and so much better than last week, but I didn't think it showed how special she is. I would have liked for her to do something really different in the chorus and thereafter. She's so classy, so sweet. She's unique and special, but the song was not, really.
Michael Johns - Queen Medley - Weird that his best songs are Queen songs. I thought this showed much more versatility and it was more interesting than any of his recent performances. And it was evident that he enjoyed singing this medley.
Carly Smithson - Total Eclipse of the Heart - She looks much more like a star tonight. Brian likes the "wicked rock castanets" in the background. Wow...I didn't get the end at all. That was weird. Her voice sounded good on this song, but I didn't feel the connection. The original was kind of mysterious and ethereal, but this seemed a little empty. I think Simon & Randy are both right, she needs to lighten up a little. Vocally, she's there, but she needs to show us that she "gets" the songs.
David Archuleta - You're the Voice - Hmmm...another song I don't know. It's a strange song, and not really cool, (like Total Eclipse of the Heart), but he sings so well and he "feels" the song, which is good. He looks less babyish tonight, which is also good. I'd like to see him step out of the teeny-bopper persona/style, since he won't be able to make that work for him for too many years. I think he needs to show that he can sing something that's a little more raw and vulnerable, emotionally.
Kristy Lee Cook - God Bless the USA - Well, this is definitely her niche. And I much prefer her singing a country song that was meant to be a country song, rather than a countrified pop song. The modulation was not good. The vowels are too closed, which makes her sound flat even when she's not. But this song is an American favorite, so she won points with it, and it's a good choice for her. I don't think she's going to make it to the final two, but this is her best performance in weeks. Good for her.
David Cook - Billie Jean - WOW...I totally grimaced when I heard he was doing this song, but this? This was much cooler than I expected! This was just AMAZING. That's what happens when a singer understands the lyrics. You can branch out from the original tune and style if you understand where the song is going. Oh. My. Stars. I LOVED this tonight. I thought is was so fresh and original. This is my favorite of the night. I think David deserves to win this season.
So here's my assessment: David Cook gave a stellar performance. Michael Johns and Syesha Mercado are MUCH improved. Ramielle and Kristy are still in my bottom two.
Now I'd like to know, how many of YOU actually vote? Me? I'm an avid fan, but not a responsible AI citizen. I never vote. Well, I did vote for Drew Lachey and Cheryl Burke a while back, but that's another show altogether. And I only did it once. So no, I'm a non-voter. How about you? Let me know by participating in my sidebar poll.
Be sure you get a proper AI fix by visiting Boomama and all her friends! See you next week!

American Idol Review, Part Deux
I enjoyed liveblogging American Idol so much last week, I decided to do it again. I'm no more famliar with the Beatles this week than I was last week, but I'm looking forward to it, nonetheless. I wish I had some Boomama-style of cleverness to add here, but I'm just tapped out...and a little distracted...and I have a headache. But I'm all about sacrificing and taking one the team. So, now, for your reading diversion, my American Idol review:
Amanda Overmyer - Back in the USSR - Well, she looks a lot better tonight. The short straight hair looks younger, less scary. I think she sang better, too. I would never buy her record (Brian agrees), but I was a lot less scared. Simon reminded her that her tickets (to the Amanda Overmyer concert) aren't on sale yet. Good point.
Kristy Lee Cook - You've Got to Hide Your Love Away - Not as much of a mess as last week, but just not a stand-out. I think she got stuck in the low and then had trouble finding the other notes. I want to like her. I really do. She seems like such a sweet girl. But I think she needs sweeter, lighter songs. I think her voice is lyrical, and this song was too heavy and dramatic for her. I think Simon's right...she doesn't have the performer chops yet...maybe next year? But I don't suppose she ha another horse to sell...Brian says she could be a model.
David Archuleta - The Long and Winding Road - Ooooh...I liked it from note one. Good job at redeeming last week's performance! Such a lovely tone, great ear. And so very expressive. I'm amazed at his grasp of the lyrics and musical style at such a young age. Just amazing. What a performance. Aha. Simon agrees with me. ;)
Michael Johns - ?? - Cool song...don't know it, but it's cool. I think Michael is quite good, but there are a lot of weak spots in his voice and his performance. He reminds me of Val Kilmer. Weird, huh? Now, he gives a good performance, but I feel like he gets lost in himself and tunes the audience out. I'd like to see him connect with the audience. And the singing, while good, didn't wow me. Hmm...Paula said what I'm trying to say. Simon says it's a mess. I'm not sure I agree with that, but I didn't think it was top 3 caliber.
Brooke White - Here Comes the Sun - I didn't like this song as much as Let it Be, but Brooke looked like she was having a ball...and she looked very sunny, herself. I like her better on the more contemplative tunes. This seemed a little pop-py for her. Randy expressed what I felt. But Paula's right, you can't help but smile when you watch her. I do like how she takes criticism. I'm not sure what Simon means when he says "wet"...ewww? Not her best, but it was a good growth moment for her.
David Cook - Daytripper - He totally gets what Michael Johns doesn't get. He connects with the audience and the camera. Did you see him making eyes at the camera? He brings something different to his performance each week. He keeps it fresh and intersting. What was that freaky thing he did with his mouth and the mike? Cool, but weird! He looks like a rock star. Rock is not my favorite genre, but I really like this guy! Paula's right...just like Daughtry, he's ready to sell records right now. Simon thinks he's predictable, but hello? How about Amanda Overmyer?
Carly Smithson - Blackbird - I love this song. I'm not digging her look tonight, though. She's so pretty...kind of looks like Martina McBride, and sounds a bit like her too, but tonight she looks a little too old. Sounds great, though. I liked the soulful, emotional arrangement. Liked the drama created by her low voice. I would have liked to see her be a little more intimate with the audience, though.
Jason Castro - Michelle Ma Belle - Good for you, Jason, for doing the French diction thing. And that there French stuff ain't easy, neither. I still love this guy's voice. Love the emotion. Love the grin. But he looks a little cheesy pacing across the stage. He looks better with a guitar. The song was good, but I'd have like to see him focus his gaze, so it would look like he was singing to Michelle. It needed to be a little more intimate.
Syesha Mercado - Yesterday - Pretty dress. I liked the emotion and the simplicity with which she sang. I thought she stretched the tempo a little too much at "Why he had to go..." and thereafter, in an attempt to milk the lyrics. That made it a little awkward, and it's a tricky thing to do well. But the vulnerability made her unique tonight. Simon's right, it would have been a great song for Brooke, but I'm glad Syesha had a chance to show herself in this capacity tonight.
Chikezie Eze - I've Just Seen Her Face - Um....I don't get the harmonica thing. I don't know this song...is that part of the original? He's still adorable, but I'm bewildered. I like the energy, but the arrangement just confused me. Good, not great.
Ramielle Malubay - I Should Have Known Better - Much better than last week. But the prancing/pacing across the stage with the shoulders bobbing seems cheesy. Not my favorite, but a definite improvement over last week. A breath in the middle of a word. Last note was a bit off. Cute, but not great.
Tonight's standouts: David A. is back on his game. Love the little crooner boy. David C. was smokin', as usual.
Runner-ups: Carly was soulful. And Jason gave a sweet, if a little cheesy, performance.
Here's my ranking, based on tonight's performances:
David Cook (beats David A. based on consistency)
David A.
Carly
Jason
Syesha (beats Brooke based on suitability of song)
Brooke
Michael
Chikezie
Ramiele
Amanda
Kristy
I would like to keep Kristy around for another week, but I look for her to go. Like it or not, I think Amanda has a better feel for what works for her on the stage.
Edited to add: I forgot to include my Boomama link. Go check her out for American Idol Awesomeness! And be sure to check out the rest of the Boomama site. She's more fun than a cat in socks!

Because Boomama Said So, That's Why
So Boomama has started her liveblogging of American Idol, and she's invited other kindred bloggers to share their thoughts. I'm pretty sure that all 3 people who are reading my blog will appreciate reading my informed and invaluable opinions of the AI gang. Only tonight it won't be so informed. I mean, I have a degree in music education, with a vocal/choral emphasis, and I have taught both elementary music and middle school choir, but I am the only person born in the (VERY late) sixties, who hasn't made the Beatles her life's soundtrack. My husband, Brian, bought a Beatles CD collection several years ago, so I've been exposed to them, but I'm just not an expert on all things Beatle, know what I mean? Now if you want to know some of the finer points of The Oak Ridge Boys, I'm your girl. I know. I was country when country wasn't cool. But still. I know what I like, and I like American Idol. Oh yes I do. And my sweet husband, bless his heart, lets me watch it while he does the dishes. Amazingly, he's not a fan. But he's a GREAT husband, and hey, he likes the Beatles.
Are you ready? Here we go!
Syesha Mercado - Got to Get You Into My Life - I like Syesha a lot, think she's cute as a button, but this just didn't work for me. I thought it had a disco-ey feel, and I felt she had some tuning issues. I didn't think it showed off her personality or voice very well, either. Interesting that Simon liked it. I usually agree with him.
Chikezie Eze - She's a Woman - Speaking of cute as a button, I think Chikeze is A. Dorable. Groovy. I like the "jam session" feel at the beginning of the song. I could hear Rascal Flatts doing this version. I love this song for Chikezie. Strong vocals. Really shows him branching out and cutting loose. I mean it. I love his confidence and how much fun he's having. And see? Simon does agree with me!
Ramiele Malubay - In My Life - Ramiele is a doll. So tiny, and such a big voice. I like the sensitivity she brings to even the smokin' songs. She sounds pretty on this song, but it seems a little lackluster for her. A little disjointed. It almost felt like she didn't get it, in spite of her introductory remarks about it. I wish she'd started in a seated position, and drawn us in. Again, I agree with Mr. Cowell.
Jason Castro - If I Fell - Jason is one of my top two this season. I've liked him, dreads and all, since his first appearance on the show. I think the guy is a musical genius, and I think he "gets" the songs, and he gets who he is, musically. He blew me away with "Hallelujah" last week. Interestingly, both last week and this week, I've felt that his interpretation of the song was more sensitive than the original (and other) versions. Such a sweet and gentle voice. Even the thin notes are sweet. As a former music teacher, the "h" on "you" (hyou) bothered me. I agree with Simon, sort of. I felt it was not as good as last week, but still very good and very different from the rest of the pack.
Carly Smithson - Come Together - I missed this one, because of a little power problem at our house (Which had nothing to do with the fact that my husband doesn't really dig the show. Really.), but I heard snatches. Carly is not my favorite, but I think she's got the chops. Can't say much more, since I missed most of this one.
David Cook - Eleanor Rigby - David is the other in my top two. Like Jason, I believe he has a strong sense of who he is musically, and has done clever interpretations of songs (similar to Daughtry). I thought he was brilliant last week. I didn't like this one as much as last week's choice, but I thought the chorus rocked. The verses were a little bland for me, but on the chorus, he got to the heart of the song, and he schooled the audience. Really. Look at all the lonely people. Like Simon, I feel that David has the maturity and the musicality to be a winner in this competition.
Brooke White - Let it Be - Brooke is just a sweetheart. I think she's talented enough to win, but I am guessing that she's going to be more popular with a slightly older or less teeny-bopper audience. I'm thinking that fans of Carole King and Sheryl Crow fans will vote for her, but that the edgier singers will win over the younger set. I thought this was a beautiful and quietly passionate performance. Randy used the word "conviction", which I think descibed her performance beautifully, and Simon said "brilliant" again. I agree.
David Hernandez - I Saw Her Standing There - I'm not familiar with this song. David has a nice voice, but I didn't think this song showed it off at all, and I don't think he really did the song justice. It just felt lame. And, again, as a former music teacher, I didn't like the breaths in the middle of words "saw (breath) her stand (breath) ding there". I agree with Simon, it was a little corny.
Amanda Overmyer - You Can't Do That - Amanda has never been one of my favorites. I agree, she's unique, and she does her style well, but her style is not my style. I don't get it and I don't particularly like it. But does anyone else out there see a strange resemblance to Jodi Foster? Maybe I'm just weird. My husband doesn't see it. I will say that I like her with the lighter makeup tonight. She looks younger without the scary makeup. Her voice hurts my throat, though. And I hear some pitch problems here and there. She made it her own, and it's very different, but it's still not me. Simon thinks she's a breath of fresh air, but even though her hair is better tonight, she still looks like a skunk. I'm sorry...just sayin'. Simon and I will agree to disagree here.
Michael Johns - Across the Universe - I like how organic Michael is. No schtick. Just good singing. Like Brooke, I suspect Michael might be a bit more popular with an older crowd -- Michael Bolton and Phil Collins fans -- but he's solid and not affected, and the accent adds a nice dimension. I'm not familiar with this song either, but I liked it. I thought it was beautiful and lyrical, yet contemporary. I didn't think it was stand-out, but I liked it a lot. I think that's kind of what Simon was saying. Michael seems so original, but he's not doing anything original with the songs.
Kristy Lee Cook - 8 Days a Week - Kristy is adorable too, and I like her a lot. I didn't think this song worked, though. I liked the concept, but it needed to be a "cooler" country version. I thought the instrumentation made it sound cheesy, and I didn't think she kept enough of the originally melody in it. On the whole, though her singing was pretty good, the song seemed weak to me. I think it had a lot of what country music haters hate about country music. I would have liked to hear a more Faith Hill type of interpretation. Simon was harsh, but in theory, I agree.
David Archuleta - We Can Work it Out - Who doesn't love little David Archuleta? He is such a cutie. I didn't like the start of it...too low, the stairs were cheesy. He seemed overwhelmed by the song. He made a valiant effort, but this song seemed to big, too old for him. And it lacked his usual exuberance and joy, probably because of the nerves. He needs to get past the fear and really get to know the song. His lack of maturity shows here, but he has so much potential. I seem to remember Jordan having a moment like this when she came into the top 12. Simon's right...he has to step it up to keep up with the big boys (and girls), but he can do it.
OK...even though Jason & David Cook are my top 2, and even though Brooke's song was gorgeous, Chikezie stole the show for me tonight.
Here's my ranking of the top 12, based on tonight's performances:
Chikezie
David Cook
Brooke
Jason
Ramiele
Syesha
Michael
(Carly)-didn't see her...power failure
David A.
Kristy
Amanda
David H.
I think David Cook is the strongest, overall. I think he's brilliant, and cool, and appeals to a broad audience.
What do you think?
